MNPS/PPE Conduct Rules

Basic Expectations

At Percy Priest students are expected to:

  • Abide by all Metro Public School Rules: Please refer to "Parent, Teacher, and Student Handbook” which includes rules for students who ride buses. These printed documents are made available to our students at the beginning of the school year in your First Day packet.
  • Show respect to all teachers and adults who work at Percy Priest.
  • Turn in class assignments and homework on time.
  • Bring books, paper, pencils and other supplies to school each day.
  • Take care of all school and library books. Lost or damaged books must be replaced before a final report card will be issued.
  • Be responsible for all personal property; first and last names should be written on ALL belongings: coats, hats, lunch boxes, book bags, etc. Lost and found items are placed in :Lost & Found" for a limited time. Unclaimed items without names are sent to a service organization for distribution to the needy.
  • Refrain from profane language or vulgar actions. Comments intended to insult another student will not be tolerated.
  • Wear Standard School Attire
  • Practice good grooming. Hair clean and neat, no makeup. Children who are groomed and dressed for school usually act appropriately and feel confident in learning.

At Percy Priest students SHOULD NOT:

  • Bring toys of any kind (including walkman-type radio/tape players, pogs, beanie babies, and trading cards of any kind). If a child brings these items to school, they will be taken away and kept until the last day of school. Toys cause problems that take up precious teaching time.
  • Bring or chew gum. Please DO NOT send gum as a treat. It creates a tremendous cleaning problem inside and outside the building.
  • Bring more money than they need to buy lunch or supplies for the day.
  • Bring candy or soft drinks. Healthy snacks and/or fruit juices are allowed with teacher permission.
  • Bring or use drugs. (Zero Tolerance-automatic expulsion)
  • Bring alcohol or tobacco to school. (Automatic suspension)
  • Bring knives, guns or weapons of any kind. (Zero Tolerance)
  • Bring firecrackers. (fireworks of any kind), caps, cap guns, or water guns. (Automatic suspension)
  • Maliciously destroy, mutilate or deface school property; parents are held financially responsible for damage. (Automatic suspension)
  • Fight, punch, hit, kick, or cause physical harm to another student. (Zero Tolerance)

Discipline

At Percy Priest, each teacher implements his or her own discipline plan within our overall framework of basic expectations as previously outlined. These plans are discussed with the students from the very first day of school and are communicated to parents through teacher letters. In addition, the teachers review these plans at our fall Open Houses.

We encourage you to talk with your child about school behavior. Our teachers and guidance counselor work together with the principal to conduct programs in the classroom on a regular basis which help students learn many coping strategies for everyday situations which occur at school. We will help students develop self-discipline, but we will not allow a disruptive student to interfere with the learning process of others. Disruptive behavior takes away precious teaching time. If a child continually exhibits disruptive behavior, the parent/guardian will be called for a conference and the child may be suspended.

Classroom Conflicts

When a parent has a question regarding teaching practices, or general classroom guidelines, the following process will be followed:

  1. Parent/Teacher conference; student present, if needed.
  2. Parent/Teacher/Principal conference; student present, if needed.

The principal cannot resolve issues unless all aspects of a situation are represented. Most classroom misunderstandings are resolved with a parent/teacher conference.

Bus Rules

Percy Priest abides by all bus rules established by the Metro School Board; for details you may refer to policy #3545 iof the Metro Parent, Teacher, and Student Handbook. Children who live at least one and 1/4 miles from school may ride the bus. Check at school for route schedules. If your street is not on a regular route, call the Metro Transportation office at 782-3878.

Please remember that riding the bus is a privilege. For any discipline problems encountered on the bus, the following procedure will occur:

  • First offense: Parents will receive a letter, to be signed by the parents and returned to the principal the following day.
  • Second offense: Child suspended from the bus for up to three days.
  • Third offense: Child suspended from the bus for up to six days.
  • Fourth offense: Child suspended from the bus and school until the parent/guardian comes for a conference with the principal and a satisfactory solution is worked out.

If your child is suspended from the bus, you must provide transportation to and from school. If you do not bring the child to school, the absences will be unexcused and reported to the Metro Attendance Officers, and the child will receive zeros on all graded work or tests missed.

Remember, the safety of all children on the bus is the important factor. If your child encounters a problem with another student on the bus, this should be reported to the principal, and the principal will resolve the matter.

All Metro School buses are equipped with equipment necessary to videotape bus behavior. Videos will be periodically requested and viewed by the Principal.

Any child brought to the office by a bus driver will receive a notification from the Principal to be signed by the Parent/Guardian and returned to school. Offenses will accumulate and could lead to a child being permanently suspended from riding the school bus.
