PPE has been recognized as State Champions for the fifth year.
Only two schools in Tennessee are recognized for this prestigious award. Percy Priest Elementary has won this award in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, and a plaque is on display by the gym.

Youth Physical Activity Guidelines
• Children and adolescents should have 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily.
• Aerobic: Most of the 60 or more minutes a day should be either moderate or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity and should include vigorous-intensity physical activity at least 3 days a week.

Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; 2008. The software that was used in the past which informed you of your child’s percentile scores is now obsolete, so you will be receiving a bar graph in the very near future. Please review and spend time talking with your child about their physical fitness test scores. Every student worked very hard to achieve these marks! 2010-11 School Year- See what we did!

Thank you to PPE families who made donations and spent time helping us in the gym in 2010-11.

We had another year of tremendous support for the American Heart Association, with third grader Genevieve Mahoney being the top fundraiser at PPE for a second year in a row, raising $617! Currently, our school’s contribution is $9564!! The AHA’s thank-you gifts should arrive in a few weeks. Frequently parents and students ask us where they can purchase equipment like long ropes, speed cups and pull-up bands. The following three catalogs have it all:
USGames, SportTime or GopherSport.

Campaign to remember: wear athletic shoes to PE!
The Physical Education Department would like to ask that you know which days your child has PE, because winter is just around the corner and all the cute boots are good for school and fashion, but they do NOT give good support for P.E. classes.

How would you like to run a half mile in boots, crocks, or shoes that do not give your feet good support? The next time you buy your child a new pair of shoes; please consider buying a real pair of tennis shoes, instead of skate board shoes or All Star Converse. Your child is welcome to leave a pair of tennis shoes in their classroom and change for PE. When your daughters wear skirts or dresses to PE make sure they are wearing shorts under the dress. One final note, if your child does not know how to tie shoes, spend 5 minutes and try to teach them how. Children who know how to tie shoes are more confident and it is a self-esteem builder!

Check out some PE equipment and other fun stuff to help keep your child active!

Frequently parents and students ask us where they can purchase equipment like long ropes, speed stacking cups, soccer goals, juggling balls, a tether ball pole, etc. The following two catalogs have it all:

Sportime – www.sportime.com – phone 1-800-283-5700 or fax 1-800-845-1535.
GOPHER – www.gophersport.com – phone 1-800-533-0446 or fax 1-800-451-4855.

PPE Physical Fitness Awards Ceremony

Congratulations State Champs!

We are very proud of the accomplishments of all our students and the effort they have given to achieve their personal goals.

Mary Nash and Betty Dysart

Do you want your child to be involved in one of the best Physical Education programs in Tennessee? The P.E. classes at Percy Priest are high-energy and fun, with the focus on fitness and performance. The hour-long classes held twice a week, along with daily recess are signs of our school’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Percy Priest has consistently earned the highest award for outstanding achievement in physical fitness by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. During the 2008-2009 school year and again in 2009-2010 Percy Priest was once again recognized as one of the top elementary schools in our state.  Please look us up on the President’s Challenge website.

The generous support from the PTO makes it possible for every student to have a ball or rope and enjoy 100% participation at all times. The P.E. curriculum, based on state standards, includes knowledge and skill development in a wide range of traditional sports. Non-traditional activities are equally popular among our students, including juggling and cup stacking.

“Walk to School Day” and “Jump Rope for Heart” are two events the P.E. department promotes to encourage a healthy lifestyle. And of course, what would the end of the year be without Field Day? This is a time to celebrate our school spirit with P.E. activities designed for participation, learning, and fun. It’s a time for all of us to feel young at heart and enjoy being a Percy Priest Tiger!!!
