The COW Commandments - The DOs and DON'Ts of using the COW

  • DO wash your hands well before using the computers. Keyboards harbor germs and sticky fingers are a no no!
  • DO NOT walk around carrying a laptop computer. Adults are the only people allowed to walk around carrying the laptops to and from the desks.
  • DO NOT TOUCH THE LAPTOP SCREENS WITH YOUR FINGERS!!! The oil from your fingers will KILL the screen! (Computer #1 has a big scratch on the screen—SO obviously no fingernails touching the screen either!)
  • DO put the felt between the keyboard and the screen anytime you close the computer.
  • DO shut down the computer properly --- when you are finished with the computer, click on the START menu, click “Log Off” then click on “Turn Off the Computer” and finally click “Turn Off.” Wait until the screen goes completely black before you close it up. If you don’t follow these procedures, the computer goes to sleep and doesn’t really shut all the way down.
  • DO plug in the power cord on the back side of each laptop when it is returned to the cart. If you forget, the laptop will not be charged the next time someone is ready to use it.
  • DO plug in the cart when it is returned to the COW closet and SWITCH ON BOTH of the power switches on the back of the cart. There have been times when only ONE switch was turned on, and then only ½ of the computers get charged!
  • DO NOT (NEVER, EVER, EVER) roll the cart down the wooden ramp to the pod area! The ramp is too steep. The cart is too heavy, and this is a real danger to the people trying to move it. The EMPTY cart weighs 350 pounds! You can safely add another 100 pounds for the weight of 25 laptops. DO (ALWAYS) roll the cart outside the door beside Mrs. High’s room and down the longer concrete ramp to get it down to the pod level. Enter the pod through the doors by Mrs. Trujillo’s Spanish classroom.
  • DO use the large vinyl grill cover to enable the cart to go outside in the rain without damaging the computers.
  • DO notify someone on the Technology Committee if you have any technical problems relating to the COW. If the problem is with a specific laptop, please let them know the laptop number and the nature of the problem ASAP.
