4th Grade News: 9/17

It’s been a wonderful week in 4th grade! Please see below for important reminders and information on the week ahead.

Quick Reminders:

Supplies Needed: Please double check that your child has earbuds/headphones. Sometimes they get lost or misplaced, and the students need them for activities in tech lab, iReady, Lexia, and music. Thank you!

How can my student practice math fluency?
Commonly misunderstood as memorization, fluency is the ability to apply procedures accurately, efficiently, and flexibly. Fluency is the ability to recognize when one strategy is more appropriate than another and the ability to transfer understanding to different problems and contexts. In 4th grade, we want to see our students being fluent in basic facts using the four operations. Games are a great way to “hide” the math and practice those skills! One easy way to help your child is by playing “War” with a deck of playing cards. Each player throws down a card, and the person to shout out the product (answer to a multiplication problem) gets the two cards. The player with the most cards wins!

In the car, every time the car stops, give the student a multiplication problem to solve. See how many they can correctly answer from place to place.
Having regular practice (even if they have mastered their facts) will greatly help your child with their stamina throughout multi-step contextual problems in math.
