Kindergarten News: 1/28

Hi Parents,
The art show was a huge success! We are blessed to have Dr. A teaching our students to embrace and appreciate their artistic talents. Thank you for your support. ?
Take Home Readers continue to go home with your child each week! Please make sure the book bag/envelope is returned to school each Thursday. The school-wide Read-a-Thon will take place next month, so we want our kiddos to build their confidence and stamina to read, read, read!!
Here’s what is coming up in kindergarten…

ELA: Essential Question: What makes a good story?

Focusing Questions: How do authors create characters? How do authors create problems and solutions?
~With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text
~With prompting and support, identify characters, setting, and major events in a story
~Determine and apply new meanings for familiar words (multiple-meaning words)
~Capitalize the first word in a sentence
~Recognize and name end punctuation
~Students will begin to listen for consonant clusters (blends) and digraphs (ch/sh/th/wh) at the beginning and ending of words
~Read and write high frequency sight words (Heart Words)
~Read grade level texts with purpose and understanding (Take Home Readers)

~Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number or objects in another one.

~Participate in shared research- Penguins, Ground Hog
~Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which students name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic

Social/Emotional Learning (SEL)
~Demonstrate awareness and consideration of other people’s emotions, perspectives, cultures, and celebrations
~Develop and model effective decision-making skills to deal responsibly with social situations

~February 1st- March 4th- Black History Month celebrations (school-wide)
~February 8th- 100th Day of School! (If there are no more snow days! Check Friday folder for details)
~February 8th- Progress Reports Issued February 14th- Valentine’s Day Class Parties (Check Friday folder and your child’s class newsletter for specific details) ~February 18th- No School February 22nd-March 9th- Read-A-Thon Kick-Off (More information to come)
