MNPS Cuts Percy Priest Funding

Due to decreased student enrollment at Percy Priest this year, Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) has reduced Percy Priest’s school year budget by $119,000, which included cutting funding for our Library clerk and our two enrichment specialists.  This is a significant decrease to our budget and Dr. Young immediately went to work to review our budget – line by line – with the goal of retaining all our talented and valued teachers.

Through Dr. Young’s work, we were able to meet the budget reduction without losing any PPE teachers. Instead, PPE decided not to fill a vacant staff position and cut a portion of the budget dollars allocated to technology, books, and other teacher supplies.

Interventionists and enrichment teachers allow our classroom teachers to maximize his/her time with the remaining students in their classroom. Given that these specialists work with over 100 students weekly, your PTO Executive Team felt that these teachers were essential to our children’s education and the success of PPE as a strong community school. The PTO Executive Team met on September 30th and voted unanimously to fund the 2 Enrichment Specialists for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year out of PTO funds. Since this was an unplanned expense, we will revisit decision after we receive the 2021-22 school budget and are able to reevaluate the PTO’s remaining funds.

Budget reductions and eliminating the open position helped us fill most of the budget gap, but to retain the enrichment teachers, the PTO must dip into our emergency reserve dollars. The PTO leaders could think of no better investment of these reserve dollars than helping our students and teachers during the current COVID-19 crisis. Through the generosity of past and current PPE parents and supporters, our PTO was able to directly help PPE students and retain our valued teachers and staff during this challenging time. As you can see, your INVEST pledges and donations are important and impactful.

The budget for the 2020-21 school year will be updated and added to the Percy Priest Website in the coming weeks. Should you have any questions, please reach out to Kass Benchoff or Ginny Dolezal, Co-PTO Presidents at
