2nd Grade Newsletter – December 5th, 2025

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • What is the name of the new text we are reading in Wit & Wisdom?  (The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie de Paola
  • What is a legend?  (a story passed on through word of mouth; like a folktale)
  • Who is the main character? (She-Who-Is-Alone)
  • What is a plural noun?  (a word that names more than one thing)
  • What do you add to the end of the following words to make them plural – watch, boy, fox, dish, book? (watches, boys, foxes, dishes, books)
  • What are some strategies you can use to solve 2 digit  addition and subtraction problems?  (pictorial model, number line, using place value)

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 2: The American West
    • Essential Question: What was life like in the West for early Americans?
    • Focusing Question: What life lesson can we learn from the story of the Bluebonnet?
    • Text: The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie dePaola
    • Learning Goals:
      • Determine the lesson of The Legend of the Bluebonnet and explain how it is supported by key details.
      • Orally recount what happens in the story.
      • Explore story events and character responses.
      • Experiment with creating introductory statements for informative paragraphs.
      • Answer the Focusing Question Task.
    • Tennessee Foundational Skills: REVIEW skills from Unit 3
      • Ask and answer questions about key details in the student reader, The Job Hunt.
      • Sounds: /ie/ long i sound spelled with y, i, or ie (ex. my, shy, kind, pie);/oe/ long o sound spelled with ‘o_e’, ‘oe’, ‘ow’ and ‘o’ (open, hope, foe, snow)
      • Changing ‘y’ to ‘i’  and adding -es
      • Regular and irregular plural nouns
      • Read and answer questions from our student reader, The Job Hunt
      • Spelling Words: car, bar, store, chore, nerve, serve, stir, shirt, girl, bird, fur, hurt, turn, purse
