In this unit, students solve problems from the real world to identify arithmetic patterns within a number chart, addition table, or multiplication table. Students will be able to explain arithmetic patterns using their knowledge about the properties of operations.

Students will begin a study of literature focusing on the experience of immigrants as they explore the essential question. The module begins building student independence by asking students to consider the value of noticing and wondering before beginning an in-depth study of Grandfather’s Journey, Allen Say’s picture book about the experiences of a Japanese man torn between his love for Japan and his love for the United States.
