SCHOOL UPDATES

Spotlight on Specials Section

(say that 5 times fast)

This week it’s…..LIBRARY!

This just in across our desk (telegram noise)…Ms. Stuart says we’re on track to hit OVER 3,000 LIBRARY BOOK CHECKOUTS FOR AUGUST. A PPE record. How exciting to see our students flourishing and developing a love for reading in our new library space. Special thanks to PPE parent Jordan Long for adding her designer’s eye and giving her time to the space to make it an even cozier and inspiring area of the school.

A message from our fabulous librarian, Ms. Stuart:

“I want all PPE students to have a childhood formed by stories. Stories that help them learn the true, do the good, and love the beautiful!

Sharing these stories with children in a sunlit filled library…such joy! Never loses its magic.”

What Students Learned This Week in Library:

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL:

Houses, House Meetings & Navigator Weeks

All students in grades preK-5 are part of our house system.  Houses are groups within the school consisting of students and staff from different grade levels.  The house system provides opportunities for reinforcing teamwork, social emotional skills, and developing a sense of community and belonging for our students.  There are 5 houses at Percy Priest
House Amistad – House of Friendship – House Color – Red
House Altruismo – House of Givers – House Color – Black
House Sollevare – House of Uplifting – House Color – Yellow
House Isibindi – House of Courage – House Color – Green
House Reveur – House of Dreamers – House Color – Blue
Students in preK-3 are part of the same house as their homeroom teacher.  In grades 4 & 5, students participate in a ceremony where they are sorted into one of the five houses.
Throughout the year students have the opportunity to participate in house challenges and to earn class compliment and house points through demonstrating positive behaviors throughout the school in alignment with our positive behavior intervention and support system.  These house points are accumulated throughout the school year and at the end of each nine weeks there will be recognition for the house with the most points for that time period.
At the end of each month, the school will come together for a school-wide event called a “House Meeting”.  House Meetings provide us with opportunities to build community and highlight student achievements and student performances.  Each homeroom teacher will select a student to be recognized at the end of each month as the ROAR behavior winner for their class.  Winners are selected based on consistent demonstration of our ROAR behavior (Respect, Ownership, Acceptance, Responsibility), as well as demonstration of our International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile trait of the month. The traits by month for this school year are listed below.
August – Thinkers
September – Open-Minded
October – Caring
November – Knowledgeable
December – Balanced
January – Risk-Takers
February – Principled
March – Reflective
April – Inquirers
May – Communicators
Students are encouraged to wear their field trip t-shirts, house t-shirts, or house colors on House Meeting Days.  House Meetings will also regularly incorporate guest speakers and community performances designed to help students build their identify as a member of a local and global community.
A few years ago, Metro Nashville Public Schools developed the “Navigator Program” as a strategy to amplify student voice and strengthen student connections with school and staff.  This year, Percy Priest will have designated Navigator Weeks at the end of each quarter.  During these weeks, each student will have the opportunity to complete a check-in with their homeroom teacher or another staff member assigned as their classroom navigator.  These check-ins help support students with goal-setting, advocating, problem solving, and building connections.

Help us keep the momentum going on Invest and don’t wait to donate! The students get fun prizes for class participation. If a financial donation not in the books right now? That’s ok! Remember to log your participation in Invest through the link here. This video can help you navigate how to log participation without a monetary amount. Have Lunch With Your Student!

Did you know that at PPE you can sign up to go eat lunch with your kids during their lunch time?

Here is a helpful page with each grade level’s lunch time and the official sign up to eat lunch with them. Reminder: same day lunch plans are permitted, but the calendar doesn’t let you sign up same day. Please email catherine.gerald@mnps.org for same day lunch plans to let school know you’re coming so that your badge is ready to go.
