SCHOOL UPDATES

BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT PERCY PRIEST

This year we are continuing to build on our Black History Month Reading Initiative.  The attached calendar includes links to daily read-alongs completed by current and former PPE staff.  These read-alongs can be accessed at school and at home.  Each day on morning announcements we include a question of the day for students to reflect on the text and how it relates to this month’s IB trait of being principled.  Additionally, our 4th grade students are preparing a musical performance in honor of Black History Month.

READATHON!

“The sun was shining, but some water still fell from the trees.
In front of the boxcar a pretty little brook ran over the rocks with a waterfall in it.
‘Henry!’ cried Jessie. “Let’s live here!’
~The Boxcar Children
A note from Ms. Stuart:
Thank you, thank you for alllll the extra time you have spent reading stories with your children. AND for ferrying them to bookstores, enduring the crumbs from indoor picnics, and for graciously hosting those “treasures” constructed from repurposed junk.
If there is one thing fourteen read-a-thons have shown me, it is this -two weeks of focused reading works a particular kind of magic. It can change a child’s world—and their reading—entirely.  As Kathleen Kelly (of You’ve Got Mail fame) so rightly noted, a book read in childhood becomes a part of one’s identity in a way that no other reading ever quite manages again.
March 2nd: Reading Logs are due by 3:00
March 5th: Last day to collect badges for the Challenge Card
March 6th: Book Character Dress-Up Day & Read-a-Thon Celebration Day
Students who achieve the 100 book (Kindergarten) and 1,500 minute (1st-5th) challenge will be recognized during morning announcements and receive a certificate and prize.
