2nd Grade Newsletter: 02/07/25

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • What type of text is Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington?
  • What are civil rights? Can you give an example?
  • What is the schwa sound? Which of the following words have the schwa sound about, severe, flower, benefit, happy?
  • What is the difference between a non-standard unit and a standard unit of measurement? Can you give some examples of each?
  • What are some examples of how you might use push forces while you’re on the playground? What are some examples of how you might use pull forces while you’re on the playground?

 

What 2nd Graders Are Learning Next Week:

 ELA (English Language Arts):

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 3: Civil Rights Heroes
    • Essential Question: How can people respond to injustice?
    • Learning Goals: 
      • Generate text-based observations and questions about I Have a Dream.
      • Explain how images contribute to a text.
      • Compare and contrast the main points of two texts on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
      • Collect evidence to answer a question in an informative paragraph. 
      • Use the known root word equal to determine the meaning of the words equality and equally.
      • Identify and explain the purpose of adjectives. 
      • Identify and explain the purpose of adverbs.
      • Identify and compare the purpose of adjectives and adverbs.

    • Read words with the schwa + l digraph (spelled ‘ul’ as in cheerful, ‘al’ as in normal, ‘il’ as in fossil, ‘el’ as in travel, ‘le’ as in apple)
    • Read words with the ‘tion’ schwa spelling (fiction)

    • Read two-syllable words

Dates to Remember:

  • February 7th: 2nd Grade Field Trip to the National Museum of African American Music
  • February 14th: Valentine Parties

Reminders: 

  • Today is our field trip to the National Museum of African American Music. Students should wear their navigator/field trip tshirt with SSA bottoms and bring a lunch from home unless a cafeteria lunch was requested on the permission slip. 
  • Percy Priest needs your help in updating our records as we prepare for the 2025-2026 school year. Our school enrollment is used to determine our funding through a student-based budgeting system. Responses on this survey are non-binding, but the information will be helpful in our budgetary planning and considerations.
