2nd Grade Newsletter – April 10th, 2026

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • to tell you his/her favorite demonstration that Mr. Bond the Science Guy did.
  • to tell you what  inferior, superior, and degrading mean.
  • to retell the story of Separate Is Never Equal?
  • to explain why we use  an array?
  • to show you how to make an array for the number 27.  
  • to write the repeated addition expressions for 27 and the multiplication facts for 27.
  • To tell you the letters that make the /f/ sound.  (f, ff, ph, and gh)
  • To tell you how to get a short e sound.  (e = bed, ea = bread)

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 3: Civil Rights Heroes
    • Essential Question: How can people respond to injustice?
    • Focusing Question: How did the Mendez family respond to injustice?
    • Text: Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez and Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation by Duncan Tonatiuh
    • Learning Goals:.
      • Determine an essential meaning of the text.
      • Write an exploded moment narrative from the point of view of  Sylvia Mendez at the end of the book when she goes back to school.  
      • Students will write about Sylvia’s response to injustice by describing her  thoughts, feelings, actions, and have a sense of closure.
      • Revise exploded moment narratives with new temporal words to signify time order.
  • Tennessee Foundational Skills:  
    • Unit 6 
    • Read and answer questions from our decodable reader, The War of 1812
    • Spelling Words: after, barber, camera, difference, birthday, swirling, thirteen, chirping, burden, furnace, hamburger, turtle, marker, parcel, ramparts, safari, informer, organize, perform
    • Tricky word: war
    • Phonics :read and write long vowel words with the following vowel teams: ai, ay, ea, ey, ee, oe, ow, ie, igh; short vowel sounds with : ou, ea; and other vowel teams: oi, oy, aw, au, al, ow;  r-controlled words (-ar, -er, -ir, -or, -ur)
    • Grammar:  review nouns, adjectives, verbs; focus on adverbs

April 27 – 2nd Grade Outing – Auction Item  **The second grade teachers will be taking 2 students for an afternoon outing to Granny White Park on April 27.  We will make a pit stop at The Granny White Market for some tasty snacks before heading to the park. 😋  Get ready to make your bids at our annual spring auction.
