2nd Grade Newsletter – September 25, 2025

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • Why Do Leaves Change Colors ? (There is less sunlight.  The weather gets cooler.  The tree stops producing sugar.)
  • What is chlorophyll ? (the natural green pigment in the leaf)
  • What is the purpose of a conclusion in an informative paragraph? (It comes at the end of the paragraph and it reinforces the topic sentence/essential idea)
  • How many tens are in the number 726? (2 tens)  What is the value of the underlined #?  384? 80
  • What number does 3 hundreds 23 tens and 16 ones make? (536)
  • What do quotation marks in a story tell you?  (someone is speaking/talking)

What 2nd Graders Are Learning Next Week:

 ELA (English Language Arts):

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 1: A Season of Change
    • Essential Question: How does change impact people and nature?
    • Learning Goals: 
      • Describe the structure of Sky Tree by interpreting specific references to seasons
      • Analyze how the author of Sky Tree uses varied sentence structure.
      • Determine the central message of Sky Tree.
      • Plan and draft an informative paragraph about how Sky Tree shows the cycle of seasons.
      • Rehearse an informative paragraph.
  • Tennessee Foundational Skills:
    • Sound/Spelling: /or/ (ex. for); /ar/ (car); /er/ (dinner); review /oi/ (soil); /ea/ (mean); /ow/ (owl); /oo/ (pool); u_e (huge); /ou/ (out)
    • Read tricky words –  their
    • Contractions; two syllable words; quotation marks; regular and irregular past, present, and future tense verbs; inflectional endings and suffixes -ed and -ing; antonyms
    • Ask and answer questions about key details in the student reader, Bedtime Tales
    • Spelling Words: it is = it’s’ that is = that’s; she is = she’s; is not = isn’t; are not = aren’t; was not = wasn’t, I will = I’ll; you will = you’ll; she will = she’ll  tricky word: there 

Math:

  • Representing Numbers to 1,000
