ELA:
Focusing Question: How do immigrants respond to challenges in a new country?
Content Framing Question: What do I notice and wonder about The Keeping Quilt?
Students deepen their understanding of immigration as they explore the Focusing Question, “How do immigrants respond to challenges in a new country?” Students consider the value of noticing and wondering before beginning an in-depth study of The Keeping Quilt, Patricia Polacco’s much-loved picture book about the ways traditions can evolve and change as families make efforts to stay connected to their home countries while adapting to their new homes. Students also develop their writing skills as they begin to consider how to organize the events of a narrative opinion piece.
