2nd Grade Newsletter – April 24th, 2026

Ask your 2nd Grader:

  • to tell you what the USS stands for in the USS Constitution.
  • to tell you what the nickname is for the USS Constitution.
  • to tell you why the USS Constitution is called “Old Ironsides”.
  • to tell you the subject in this sentence . . . The farmer plowed the field.
  • to tell you the predicate in this sentence . . . The little girl held her mother’s hand tightly.
  • to tell you another way to say 4:30.
  • to tell you how many hours are in the day.
  • to tell you when they wake up in the morning is it 7:00 am or pm.
  • to tell you something they do when it is pm.
  • to tell you something about the class pets that came this week.

 ELA (English Language Arts):

  • Wit and Wisdom Module 4: Good Eating
    • Essential Question: How does food nourish us?
    • Focusing Question: How can food nourish my body?
    • Text: The Digestive System by Christine Taylor-Butler
    • Learning Goals:
      • The students will continue to develop and refine their ability to ask and answer questions.
      • The students will use text features to navigate and informational text.
  • Tennessee Foundational Skills:  
    • Unit 6 
    • Read and answer questions from our decodable reader, The War of 1812
    • Phonics: (review)
      • review r controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur)
      • various sounds for a, e, and i; schwa
      • long vowel sounds with vowel teams: ai, ay, ea, ey, ee, oe, ow,  
    • Grammar:  run on sentences; review nouns, adj., verbs, adverbs; building detailed sentences
    • Spelling Words – The words this week are frequently misspelled words in 2nd graders’ writing.  Please have your child write sentences with these words once you have practiced the correct spelling.
    • Spelling Words:  friend, because, they, said, isn’t, didn’t, they’re, really, very, any, school, favorite, could, where, here, went, every, thought, caught
